no fix
02.28.05 (10:56 am)   [edit]

After inspecting the html on my post about Supersize Me, I will not attempt a daring fix to get rid of the weirdo spaces.  I will just blame the problem on McDonalds - fat spaces.

hmmmm
02.26.05 (11:03 pm)   [edit]
Sorry about those big weirdo spaces down there.  I'm too tired to fix it now though.  Just keep scrolling.....

Supersize Me? NO WAY!!!
02.26.05 (11:01 pm)   [edit]
Well, we finally got around to watching the film Supersize Me.  Oh my lord.  I sort of knew what to expect, but watching the whole thing was very enlightening.  I really hope the film wins the Oscar for best documentary.  EVERY AMERICAN SHOULD SEE IT.  Especially school age children, about Nolan's age (10) and up.  The beauty with children his age is if you explain to them how advertising is a ploy just to get them to buy something, they believe you and learn to think critically about what they see.  But if nobody bothers to mention this to them, they will no doubt fall prey to the soulless marketers that target them.

Ah, but I am off track here.  We're talking about food that's REALLY bad for you.  Fat-laden, sugar-ridden "food."  I'll be the first to admit, I eat at McDonalds occasionally, at the most four times a month.  So lets say an average of once a week.  According to the film, McDonald's calls people like myself "Heavy Users."  No pun intended, I'm sure.  I usually eat the same thing - a McChicken and a small fries ($2.16 with change).  Every so often I eat a Bacon McGriddle and large coffee, which as you'll see is the grand daddy demon of their menu.  Let's analyze what I eat, shall we?  It so happens that on the McDonald's website, you can select the items in your favorite meal and view the nutrition information.  They call it "Bag a McMeal."  Let's see how this works.  Hopefully the table will translate okay to my blog; my apologies if it doesn't.  However, I'll leave it as is because I feel this is important.

Let's look at that lunch first.

I put the salt on the fries, by the way.  Salt is my weakness when it comes to food, though I do much better than I used to.  Now, how about that breakfast.

EEEEEK.  Mind you, I use four half and halfs and four sugars, but the calculator only allows six items in your "bag."  As it turns out, the Bacon, Egg & Cheese McGriddle is one of the unhealthiest items on the menu.  But it's so good.....

Not that good!  Oatmeal would be such a better choice, wouldn't it?

GOODBYE!!!

GOODBYE!!!

GOODBYE!!!

Here's the most disgusting thing of all, and what really got me.  In one of the bonus features on the DVD, they took several items and put them in large glass jars to see how they broke down over time.  Most of them looked pretty disgusting fairly quickly, but after ten weeks the fries looked like they'd come out of the fryer five minutes ago.  TEN WEEKS!!!  NO MOLD!!!  NOT ONE IOTA OF MOLD!!!  Irradiation?  GMO's?  The fries were "accidentally" thrown out at ten weeks, so it is unknown how long they would have lasted.

The horrible thing is, I eat the food knowing full well how bad it is.  I know that the potatoes are genetically modified.  I've never mentioned that topic before, but while in school I did a project for my Government Documents class on GMOs.  Scary.

I'll save that for another day.

Nolan, my sick little lad, is calling me to come read to him.  I feel so much better now that I ranted a bit.  I must not be sick anymore.

ugh.

I feel like crap.

I'm alive.....
02.20.05 (8:07 pm)   [edit]
Where on earth have I been?  Oh yes, that's right - working all weekend.  Thank goodness for the holiday tomorrow.  I have the day to myself, as Chris is working and Nolan will be with his dad (snowboarding!).  On my agenda:

  • Take a walk - the weather is so beautiful it would be a shame not to get outside
  • Finish writing my next column
  • Fight this promlematic head cold

I swear my brain is draining out my left nostril at a very high rate today.  To top that off, my head is thick.  Ugh.  And my throat is sore.  Argh.  I think when I was rundown after the stomach bug, the nasty little cold bugs swooped in and caught me unawares.  Drats.

Not much else is new here, so no doubt that's why I haven't written much.  Oh, but wait!!!  We watched a great movie last night.  The Yes Men.  I highly recommend it to anyone that doesn't care for big corporations and globalization.  It was hilarious to see what these guys got away with!!!  I would say more, but don't want to give it away.  Just watch it!!!

sunny Day!!!
02.18.05 (9:18 pm)   [edit]
Today was the most absolute gorgeous wonderful day - thank you global warming!!!  Nolan had the day off school, so we headed out to a local park with the metal detector.  We didn't find much in the way of treasures, but we sure had a great time.  There was a breeze off the water, so our hands got cold if they weren't in our pockets.  Other than that there was absolutely no indication that it's February!!!

A gull on the lookout

A murder of crows doing whatever it is they do

Nolan plays WWII bunker grenade launch (biting the pin off here)

The grenade is launched!!!  (or is that a U.F.O. over the water?)

Mmmmmm.....pretty

In other news, the scorpion has now returned to his regular home, as Nolan's dad has returned from his trip.  The cat was truly devestated - for thirty seconds.

I've been reading tons, crocheting tons (I've mastered the flat circle!!!), and sneaking in a bit of time on the Neopets site.  But it's two days of work for me this weekend, and off again on Monday.  Perhaps a movie tomorrow night.  We shall see.......

Peace and blessings to you!

And Nolan is....

A question for readers
02.14.05 (12:51 pm)   [edit]
I know many of you out there are voracious readers, and anybody who is has very strong opinions about the books they read.  Just out of curiousity then -

1.   Have you ever read a book that changed your life unexpectedly?  Something maybe you picked up on a whim, or wasn't the type of book you'd normally read?

2.   What is the best book you've ever read?  (Okay, you're allowed more than one title here, it's kind of a hard question)

Thanks for your input, and happy Valentines Day!

Better, a bit anyhow
02.14.05 (10:03 am)   [edit]

Thanks everyone for your kind words of better health and congratulations to Nolan.  I'm doing better today, though won't be going in to work.  I can use another day to rest and gather my strength together.  I had the good fortune to run into our local retired health food store godess Terri (we miss her store sooooooooo much!), and she said it sounded like a bug that's been going around.  Hits hard, stomach pain, and knocks you out real good.  Yup, that's the one.  Anyhow, the good news is she recommended echinacea tea and such to help get better.  The bad news is some of the people she knows got it again, and were even out for about two weeks!  Yikes.  I have the good fortune of a fairly strong immune system, but when I do get sick it can be bad.  I guess I'll just have to take good care of myself and make sure it doesn't strike again!!!  And I really hope Chris and Nolan don't get it.  It was no fun.

I'm eating some ramen noodles with an egg mixed in right now.  I notice my sense of taste seems a bit off too.  The egg will be good for some protein, and the noodles are nice and bland, and bulk for my stomach to work on.

Okay, I'm sure you're just all tired of hearing about this, so I'll stop now!

My task for the day is to write the draft of my next Subter column, so off I go!!!

Cheers, good health, and blessings to you all!

Yay for Nolan!
02.13.05 (11:50 am)   [edit]

Nolan won all three of his chess matches yesterday!!!!  He had a great time, and will be getting a trophy for his efforts.

The rest of the day was spent mostly at home, with a short trip out for groceries and such.  Then back home, dinner, and.......

I got sick  :(  I was up a good deal of the night purging all the bad food in my tummy.  I'm pretty sure it was the food, but I suppose it could also have been a twelve-hour bug.  Needless to say, I am totally whooped today, and just finally got up off the futon on the floor (which is where I slept last night).  Chris slept out here with me, and is now napping as he didn't get a good night's rest either.  Nolan is enjoying a go at the PS2 King Arthur game, and doing quite well.  I don't think we'll be doing much else today.

We watched Napoleon Dynamite again this morning.  I love that movie. I want to move to Preston Idaho.  It would be a good idea, what with sea levels rising and all.  Plus I bet real estate is less expensive there than where I am now.  They appear to have a nice library there.  I wonder if they're hiring?

Gotta go.  Bye!

02.12.05 (7:06 am)   [edit]

Okay, so I've been neglecting this poor little blog lately.  I promise to be better!!!  I think I'm going through blogging doldrums.

Nolan has a chess tournament at school this morning, so we're heading off for that in a few minutes.  Should be fun, I'll report back how he does.

Other than that, not much is going on.  Maybe that explains the lack of blogging.  Or maybe no explanation is needed!

Hmmmph.

Winners!!!!!
02.11.05 (10:23 pm)   [edit]

We have a winner to our contest - two in fact.  Good tidings are in order to:

ZEKELIND     and   &nbs p; AUBREYCARTER

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!

The answer to the question (who's arm and hand are in the picture behind Nolan) is - BRUCE LEE!!!!

p.s. While not the right answer, Jet Li is also an awesome guy.

A good weekend
02.07.05 (8:39 am)   [edit]
Well, Monday morning - again.  I just got Nolan dropped off to school, and now it's back to the weekly grind.  I just remembered I go in to work at noon today - good thing I didn't forget!

We had a great weekend here.  Saturday Nolan and I took a walk over to the Rock and Gem show that they have every year here in town at the senior center.  It's small, and we always see the same people, same vendors, and some of the same rocks on display!!  That's okay.  We have a good time, and Nolan always gets a couple of polished rock grab bags.  The tradition is to sit at a table in the eating area and sort them by color, taking them out of the bag one by one.  He's actually gotten some very cool rocks, but now we need to do something with them.  Put them in a glass bowl or something, so we can look at them often.

Yesterday we headed off island to the Skagit River Bald Eagle Festival.  It was cold out, and even snowing where we were!!!  However, most of our time was spent inside at the high school, where there were many education displays and some craftspeople.  Both Chris and I came out of there feeling like humanity has pretty much doomed itself.  I know that's not what you're supposed to feel after looking at the displays, I think you're supposed to feel hopeful.  But what with all the news lately on global warming, and just the realization that humans are piggish destroyers of the land that sustains them, it is rather difficult to feel hopeful on a large scale.  I couldn't help wondering what on earth I can do that will make any sort of difference to the big picture?  There is no way our society can go on like this, and eventually it will all collapse.  I guess I can just prepare for that.  And lest you think I'm some sort of crazy survivalist, I'm not.  But maybe it's time to become one.  You just never know.

There is one thing that gives me a great deal of hope though.

He and every other child out there are the reason that we adults should pull our heads out and start living in a way that creates a better world.  There is no excuse.

Hmmm, I did say it was a good weekend, and it really was!!!

Whatever
02.06.05 (8:17 am)   [edit]
Who will win the Superbowl today?  Who cares?

A CONTEST
02.05.05 (2:30 pm)   [edit]

In the picture in the previous post, there is an arm and hand on the wall behind Nolan.  If you can name the owner of that hand and arm, you could win tBucks!!!  And lots of 'em.  The first person with the correct answer will get -

ONE MILLION TBUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ready, begin.

My hands are cold!!!
02.05.05 (2:26 pm)   [edit]

If I type very quickly, will they warm up?  There is only one way to find out.  Of course, my accuracy suffers then, but who cares!!!

Nolan and I headed out earlier today to the annual Rock & Gem show here in town.  It's always a fun diversion for the day.  It's held at the Senior Center, and we always see the same displays, the same vendors, and the same people there.  What I've noticed is that Nolan's interest level in various things changes as he gets older.  He's almost at the point where he might like to join the local rock club.  Last year it was a big "NO" but this year he saw a girl from his class that has just become a member.  I don't think he quite understands how fun it might be, that there could be field trips and interesting things to learn from the other members.  As is the norm, Nolan got two grab bags of polished rocks, and there were some very pretty rocks.  We're going to have to get a nice glass vase or bowl to display them with all the rocks he's got in the past as well.

I've essentially finished Nolan's afghan, except for the border.  We're going to have to hit Mal-wart to look for more yarn, as Nolan's first color choice has been unavailable.  Otherwise he'll have to wait while I order it online.  However, the blanket is now useable!!!  As you can see...

Frodo Blankets

catch up - or is it ketchup?
02.04.05 (4:50 pm)   [edit]

Hey there, I'm sure you're all wondering what on earth we've been up to that's kept us away from the computer so much.  The truth is, we're all waiting for the scorpion to move.  It seems that after gorging on at least three crickets, he now finds it necessary to sit in the corner and scare us into thinking he's dead.  Well, I get worried about him anyhow.  He's such a swell little guy, I'd hate for anything to happen to him!!!  Fortunately for my sanity, he twitches now and then, and occassionally walks around.  I think he's just digesting.

Nolan has been spending time on the computer more too, playing on the Neopets site.  From a parents perspective, this is a pretty good site.  No icky popups, almost no advertising - just fun games and activities.  How novel!

I've been reading, and writing (which is something I have to get on with here soon).  My column, Bibliomancy, over at Subter.com is live now, and it's time to write another!!!!  I have lots of ideas, but getting it all going is the tricky part.  I think I'm on a path though, so have to run with it while the ideas are fresh in my mind.

Looking forward to the weekend - rock and gem show in town, and maybe a drive up into the mountains for the Bald Eagle Festival.  If the weather is good we might take the metal detector out too.

Gotta run!

Bummer
02.03.05 (7:08 am)   [edit]

Twice!  We all slept through a minor earthquake here this morning (3.0).  I heard the cat meowing, it may have been at that time.  Scorpion was also up in a defensive pose this morning, so I imagine he felt it.

Then one of my favorite coffee cups hs a big crack in it (I dropped it the other day).  It looked fine, but alas, the coffee seeped out the side this morning.  I'll have to use it for a pencil holder now.

Pooey.

It's official!
