A good book beckons
07.31.04 (9:24 pm)   [edit]
Well friends, I would love to blog tonight but I've started a good book that requires my undivided attention.

Windfalls, by Jean Hegland http://www.amazon.com/exec/ob...

Her first book, Into the Forest, is one of my all time favorites, and I highly recommend it to any of you that want to read a book that will make you think.

So sweet dreams to you all!

A new word, and my cat
07.30.04 (8:56 pm)   [edit]
Chris just invented a new word!

Stample - a combination of stampede and trample.

Our noisy neighbors stample up and down the stairs.

And here is our cat.

We love her very much, though she is a bit odd.

My trip, at last
07.30.04 (8:43 pm)   [edit]
Ahhhh, I know you've all been waiting with baity - I mean baited breath for the tales of my trip last weekend.

First, some pictures!

The Devil's Punchbowl

Broad Leaved Stonecrop

A really big log in really clear water

Me, striking an action pose!

Overall, Chris and I had a really good time together. It totally stunk that Nolan was not there with us. The lake was absolutely beautiful, so clear and pristine, and not even too cold to swim in (once).

Our cabin was nestled in some trees with a view of the lake. A large cedar tree had just been cut down behind the cabin, so every time I walked over to the bathroom I could smell the most wonderfull scent of fresh cedar. In the morning, the blue jays scolded us for not leaving them any food, and lots of other little brown birds twittered about. We spend a good deal of time just sitting in front of our cabin reading or talking, and I even did some beadowork!

On Monday we took a long walk along the edge of the lake - eight miles! The trail followed an old railroad grade, so was mostly flat. Eight miles is still a long walk though! It felt so good to be out in the woods walking.

Now, I've debated over what to say about the rest of the trip, which has to do with the other people that were there. Because I'm generally a nice person, I will refrain from saying some nasty things that I came up with. It serves no purpose to badmouth people. What I will say is that my world is so far removed from theirs, that I essentially had nothing to say to most of them most of the time. Remember, a couple of these people were old college roommates of mine. It was really wonderful to see A and her family before the rest of the people got there, but after that it was really obvious we didn't fit into their world. And rather than try to come up with something fake to say, I just clammed up and didn't say much. I suppose they all thought I was really unfriendly. Oh well.

There was one really nice woman there, M, who was somebody's sister and obviously not the same as the other people. I knew I like her when she talked about the last time she watched TV - "Oh, I pulled my old black and white TV out of the closet to watch the Democratic convention in, what was it, 1996?!" My hero. Chris and I talked to her the most, and she actually stopped by to talk to us when we were sitting outside our cabin.

Well, as you can probably see I've got a bad taste in my mouth over this. However, if we go back next year (and we may), I'll make sure to bring Nolan, and maybe we'll invite some of our friends. Who knows? The important thing was that Chris and I had some good time together, and I had an opportunity to think about the type of people I like to spend time with.

Time to go read and sleep, work tomorrow!

Jewelry picture
07.30.04 (2:27 pm)   [edit]
As requested by chicalookate, here is a photo of some jewelry I made. There will be more photos soon, when I can get the lighting and background business figured out!

For those of you that want to know the detailed information about these bracelets, they are made from Delica beads using peyote stitch. The clasp is just an abalone button.

Hmmm, now I can see that the picture could be much better. Drats!

Nolan's trip
07.30.04 (2:11 pm)   [edit]
As you recall, Nolan recently took a trip to Kentucky to visit his cousins and stay on a houseboat - on Lake Cumberland as it turns out.

Did he have fun? You bet he did. What could be more fun for a kid than visiting his cousins (both boys) of the same age and just two years older?

There was of couse, the incident at O'Hare airport, when their flight was delayed for eight hours and then cancelled, AND the customer service lady didn't know what she was doing. They did eventually get there, after a really long day of travel. Nolan did enjoy looking out the window when he flew, watching the world go by below.

The days on the houseboat were great. Nolan got to ride on a jet-ski, and he tried combo skiing (waterskiing with two skis). His favorite though was tubing on Great Big Mable, the tube like a couch that fit four people - or five kids as the case may be! Much time was spent swimming in lake. The last day on the lake was when they had the big thunder storm - always a treat for those of us that live in areas that just don't get them very often.

These are just some of the highlights of his trip. I'm glad he's home, as we missed him terribly while he was gone. Our trip would have been better had he been with us, but that's another story for another post...

A little teaser...
07.30.04 (9:45 am)   [edit]
I know you all are just dying to hear about our trips, but it is still not time to sit down and divulge our adventures. But I didn't want you to think we had a dull time or anything, so here's a little something to whet your appetite....

Have you ever felt like you were stranded on an island with a high school clique that you didn't belong to?
(that's my trip)

Cancelled flights, thunderstorms, and Great Big Mable!
(that's Nolan's trip)

Stay tuned for futher information.........

Home!
07.29.04 (12:39 pm)   [edit]
We are all home now and sliding back into our routines. There is much to be told about our various trips and travels (and travails?), so stay tuned for updates soon.

Cheers!

On our way!
07.24.04 (9:01 am)   [edit]
We are on our way, out the door in just a few minutes. If we forgot it, we don't need it!

Cheers, blessings, and see you on Tuesday!

Beets
07.22.04 (6:12 pm)   [edit]
I've just eaten some beets that were grown in a coworker's garden...they were the kind that have red and white stripes when you cut them open...I steamed them, and the water was still clear when they were done...some people really hate beets, and I really love them...they taste kind of like dirt...

Trip trip trip...
07.22.04 (5:12 pm)   [edit]
Two days to go until we leave on our trip and preparations are under way! I've been working on the laundry - of course, when does that ever end? We always tend to be last minute packers, so it's not like I have a ton of things to do. As long as we have a ton of clean clothes to pick from, we should be fine.

It should be an fun trip. We're meeting up with some of my old college roommates at a little resort on a lake over on "the peninsula." I'm so looking forward to seeing my friend A. We spent a good portion of our undergraduate time living in the same dorm quarters or house with a variety of friends. There will be other people there as well, including C who lived in our house for a year (while he and A were an item), his sister H, their assorted families, and two other couples. One of the other couples consists of a published author, and the sister of a member of the Presidents of the Unites States of America band. Oooooh. We're looking forward to seeing them as well.

The amazing this is I've several of these people for over twenty years now! Yikes. I know that people change as they get older, but certain personality dynamics will be interesting to observe. I shall report back any interesting tales that arise from the weekend.

We are sweltering in the hot weather here - they're calling for record breaking temperatures this weekend! Thank goodness we'll be on the lake. :)

And I will take tons of pictures for sure...

Cheers!

Biting Librarians!
07.21.04 (7:21 am)   [edit]
This item was seen recently in an alternative newspaper in a large city near me...

http://www.thestranger.com/current/ianon.html" title="http://www.thestranger.com/current/ianon.html" target="_blank"http://www.thestranger.com/cu...

THERE'S NO BITING IN LIBRARIANSHIP

You, the "biting librarian." You got sloshed and bit my girlfriend at the end-of-the-year library-school party at the **. We heard you got arrested, but we were really disappointed to see you at Convocation. Perhaps you noticed the cold shoulder you were getting--we couldn't believe you had the poor taste to show up at all. It sucks ass that the administration didn't take action to remove your ass--you, a ** employee who works at the Women's Center on a violence prevention project, for f***'s sake. Well, my librarian friends and I are talking. This is a small field, you know, and your violence against one woman is going to follow you to every job you apply for, because we will make sure that word spreads far and wide about you. Shame on you, and shame on the administration for sweeping this under the rug. There's no biting in librarianship!

Busy buzzy week!
07.20.04 (12:43 pm)   [edit]
The week ahead is going to be a busy one for me. I'm working extra hours while Nolan is gone on vacation (and only slightly miffed at myself for saying I would, since I kind of like the time off). Chris and I are also leaving Saturday for a four day trip - woohoo! It is a much needed getaway for us, for sure.

If only the kitty could blog while we're gone.....though I'd be afraid to read what she might write!

So if I seem incommunicado this week - that's why! I'm sure I'll return with some interesting tales of the weekend. And I'll try to do a bit of writing before I go, so do not despair. Huh. Yeah, right.

Okay - back to work in mere moments!

Got back from another great hike today - though very sweaty due to humidity!!! It feels so good to be relaxing at home now.

Of course I had to play with the pictures I took right away, thus the new header. My technical waza is improving! Translation = I did it all by myself!!! Took some really good pictures today. I sure love my new camera!!!

Well, off to play with my pictures some more. I can't seem to get them to upload to tblog (now that I'm a pro). Any help would be appreciated!! I'll post some more hike pictures a little later.

Cheers!

Attitude
07.18.04 (10:46 am)   [edit]
Hey everybody - be sure and head over to Sulky's place today and wish her a happy birthday! http://sulkbrarian.tblog.com

She has the following quote about attitude posted, and I'd like to share it with you too - I feel that it is soooo important for people to realize that they have a choice in how the feel. Here goes...

Attitude
by Charles Swindoll

"The longer I live, the more I realize the
impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me,
is more important than facts.

It is more important than the past, than
education, than money, than circumstances,
than failures, than successes, than what other
people think or say or do. It is more important
than appearances, giftedness, or skill. It will
make or break a company...a church...a home.

The remarkable thing is we have a choice every
day regarding the attitude we will embrace
for that day. We cannot change our past...
we cannot change the fact that people will act in
a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable.
The only thing we can do is play on the one
string we have, and that is our attitude...

I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to
me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with
you...we are in charge of our Attitudes."

Blessings to you all on this beautiful day!

Freaky!
07.17.04 (10:09 pm)   [edit]
Wow- the whole tBlog look changed in an instant! I think I like it, but I prefer change overnight while I'm asleep. That must mean it's time for me to go to bed!

07.17.04 (8:56 pm)   [edit]
Well, I just lost a long post where I was cutting and pasting random clips from other people's blogs, but it really wasn't that amusing anyhow so it's okay.

Ahhhhh, technology.

I hate it, I kind of like it. I could live without it though. I'd sure get a hell of a lot more done!!!!

Too warm!
07.17.04 (6:55 pm)   [edit]
I know I'm such a whiner, but it is just a bit too warm here today. Maybe it's the humidity. I know, I know, you people back east are scoffing at me now.

I'm in the process of typing up a bibliography of beading books that our library system has for the beading group I've become involved with. Work was thankfully slow today (at least not a ton of people came in).

Chris is reading Starship Troopers, which he maintains is one of the greatest books ever.

Kitty, aka Princess Peachpit, is sleeping under my beading table with her head on some bubble wrap. I am sure she is dreaming of missed space flights and the possibility that she may yet someday travel to the Alpha Centauri system, and whether they serve kibbles with saucy goo on the flight.

Nolan is in Kentucky.

A worthy effort for the environment
07.16.04 (9:11 am)   [edit]
Our fine friend Dr. Forbush http://www.tblog.com/template... has pointed out a wonderful website where we can voice our opinions about environmental issues.

Natural Resource Defense Council Biogems

http://www.savebiogems.org" title="http://www.savebiogems.org" target="_blank"http://www.savebiogems.org

This site provides you with an easy way to send e-mails to your elected representatives about very specific areas that need protection from damaging activities. Please sign up and start sending messages now.

I am of the mind that sending a message like those on this site is better than nothing at all. Our elected officials do keep track, even if no more than a tally pro/con on a given issue. They want to hear from us, no matter how awful they may seem to you at times. And heck, whether you voted for them or not (I certainly hope you voted), they have been selected to work for US, the citizens of their district or state. Also, some of these messages are sent to corporate executives or other government officials that may not otherwise hear of the public's disapproval of their activities.

Again, please remember to vote, and speak up! Our voices only count if we use them!

I see!
07.15.04 (10:11 am)   [edit]

Ah - so now my posts show up in bold type. Very nice.

Now I need to figure out how this whole picture thing works.

calm
You have a Calm Soul! Being calm and cool is what
you do best. You collected thoughts and always
positive attitude make you very bright and
logical. When theres a problem, you know how to
approach it, and solve it. Your friends rely on
you on their problems, and your shoulder for
their crying. You are peaceful, and enjoy
nature and freedom. You rarely get angry and
hardly scream, which makes you good with kids.
You seem to be in tune with the world and if
anything goes wrong, you always bounce back.

Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash are just the best. How wonderful we have all been blessed with the musical talents of this great family.

Better
07.15.04 (7:41 am)   [edit]
I'm mostly better now, but still irritated. However, none of it can be taken back, so it's time to move on and work to make sure such situations do not occur again. Sorry to be cryptic, but I must.

Nolan is off on a field trip today to the Seattle Science Center and Planetarium. They sure get to do some really fun things, I think it helps his attitude about going to the day camp. It's funny - it's really day care, but when you're kid is almost ten that just doesn't sound right.

I don't work until this evening, having traded my morning hours to cover for someone on vacation. So here I am with a day to myself! What a concept. I've been reading through blogs and commenting here and there. I've noticed many people seem to be on hiatus' I hope it is because they are out enjoying the summer!

I have lots of little projects to do today - as always! I'm sure I'll keep one foot in blogland all day though, so check back for more posts later!

:)

Angry
07.14.04 (8:33 am)   [edit]
Have you ever gone through an extremely unpleasant situation, then, a couple of days later when you feel like you're over it you are given some details that had been left out at the time, only to make you feel really angry? I was upset the other day, but now I am really angry.

I'm sure I'll get over it in a bit, but right now I'm not even sure what to say.

Holy Hannah!
07.13.04 (6:56 pm)   [edit]
I just got a call from AT&T wireless about an account balance of $914.00!!!

I seems that somebody with the same name as myself (but a very different SSN as it turns out) has been somewhat remiss in their payments.

I don't even have my cell phone anymore.

Whew!

Creature removal squad
07.13.04 (6:40 pm)   [edit]
Yes, I, Libraringush, am the one-person creature removal squad in our household.

This afternoon I removed a large spider from the bathroom after Nolan alerted me to it's presence. I actually knew it was there, but hadn't bothered to take care of it yet.

The second incident requiring my attention was a mouse in the living room!!! I could wring that cat's neck, let me tell you! She was acting really weird last night, but I thought it was bugs or moths she was after. But no - I now think she had brought in another little friend and managed to lose it - AGAIN. She has been very interested in the area around our CD player for the last hour or so, and then she moved behind the chair I was sitting in.

Lo and behold - there was a little gray mouse huddled between a pillow and the CD rack (maybe he just wanted to check out our collection, I don't know). I was able to herd him into a big plastic cup and take him outside. I'm sure he (or she, I suppose) was very happy to make an escape.

The tally for Princess Peachpit's Little Friend Delivery Service now stands at the following:

Mice - 3
Dead baby birds - 1
Baby Possums - 1

I've told her she's not allowed to bring her friends into the house, but apparently she either forgot or just plain didn't listen. Naughty naughty girl!

Voting

Warning: the following is a flat out beg for votes.

Practice your voting skills as November approaches (assuming they don't "cancel" the elections)!

Vote for our blog on featured blogs this week - as a birthday present for Nolan!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

News flash - I have installed my camera software on the computer. Next step - attaching the camera.

I promise I won't wait too long to do that. Really.

We took a whole bunch of pictures yesterday, and I want to get some of them sent off to people (Hi Jeremy!) sooner rather than later.

Ta ta.

And have a great Monday will ya'?

The early bird...
07.10.04 (8:34 am)   [edit]
Gets tired sooner?

Why is it that Nolan wakes up so early on the weekend, yet could sleep until noon on a school day? I cannot figure it out. Oh well, I suppose it means I have more time to get things done today.

Like blog. check

Drink coffee. check

Figure out how to put my pictures on the computer.

Go grocery shopping. check

Laundry.

Clean up my beading area.

Bead.

Read. check

Water the plants. check

Go for a hike maybe.

Go paint our ceramic projects maybe.

Drink some more coffee. check

And wonder why the cat acts so strange all the time! check

So much to do, so little time. Sigh.

Post Holiday Confusion
07.08.04 (3:04 pm)   [edit]
Why is it so hard to keep track of the days after a holiday? I can't believe it's Friday already tomorrow. And my day today is messed up, as I am working in the evening instead of the morning. No complaints though, as I was able to spend a nice morning with Nolan.

Nolan has noticed that this blog is not always about him, so I changed the title a bit. I really ought to let him write a post now and then. You know, share his wisdom with the world. He seems to have quite a bit, I really think he is an old soul.

Well, that's all really. I just wanted to ramble a bit before heading off to work. But now - coffee! And a bit of food wouldn't hurt I suppose.

MST3K
07.08.04 (9:25 am)   [edit]
Hello, hello. Things have been a little slow around here lately, and this is a good thing! I haven't really been in the mood to blog much, but I feel it coming on....

Nolan is hiding in his hidey-hole! Well, actually he was playing Champions of Norrath, Realms of Everquest on the PS2 and things got a bit difficult. Now he's wanting to play Civilization on the computer (would be another reason why I haven't blogged much).

Yesterday we went to the local paint your own ceramics place. Nolan started another dragon, and I'm working on an entry for the annual "Wild Tile Contest." It 's gonna be pretty spectacular, that's for sure! Nolan's dragon is going to be a blue dragon this time; he already has a green one and a black one. I highly recommend trying out one of these places if you haven't yet (there seems to be one in most towns of decent size). Painting is very therapeutic!

Nolan has also discovered the fun of Mystery Science Theatre 3000. http://www.mst3kinfo.com Several are available from the library, so he's been watching them. Last night we had a marathon - Angel's Revenge, Catalina Caper, and Bloodlust. Nolan prefers to call is Blood-dust.

We agreed that Catalina Caper could almost qualify as a decent movie (especially for it's time - 1967). A pretty typical beach party movie, really. Lots of dancing! Clean cut, pure teenagers in a simpler time help solve a crime without implicating their friend's guilty parents. This one starred Tommy Kirk, famous for his years on the Micky Mouse Club and roles in a host of Disney movies including Swiss Family Robinson and Old Yeller. You know who he is.

Angel's Revenge (1979), on the other hand, was a really bad movie. But the commentary was quite excellent. A group of big-haired ladies get an armored van, then go after some drug dealers that are pushing to the kids in town. Crime fighting at it's disco best! And one of Jack Palance's best roles, I'm sure. Also starred Alan Hale and Jim Backus, both known for their roles in Gilligan's Island.

I myself didn't watch all of Bloodlust. Nolan says, it was a strange movie, a very strange movie and he wants to play Civilization now!!! This one starred Robert Reed, known mostly as Mike Brady.

So, as you can see we had a lovely evening of entertainment. I will wrap this up so Nolan can get on with his game!

Cheers to you all!

Back in the swing of things
07.06.04 (4:05 pm)   [edit]
We're getting back into the swing of things here after our busy holiday weekend. Busy, but relaxing.

Nolan went camping on the coast with his dad, and had a good time despite the batch of poor quality fireworks. They managed to find some of a higher quality, which made up for it.

A good friend of Chris' visited from afar, so we had a relaxing weekend hiking and catching up with her.

I am relinquishing the computer for the evening, to spend time with Nolan and so Chris can attend to some research matters. Until next time -

I always knew he was a good kid.

I'm from Gryffindor!
You're known for being brave, loyal and trustworthy, sometimes to a fault. But if the chips were down, wed count on someone like you to help out or save our lives.
We just hope you don't get yourself killed before we can cash in on that.

When money is no object...
07.02.04 (9:09 am)   [edit]
Okay, your question for today is - what would you do if you won the lottery? I'm talking the megabucks here, not just a piddly million. Enough that money would really be no object.

Dream big!

One of the first things I would do is build a new library in my town. I'd pay for the whole thing, with the only condidtion being that it be located on the site that it should be on and not the site that has been selected (long story for another day). Wait, there would be one more condition - the building must be a completely "green" building. Something that people could look to and learn from in more ways than one.

Next I would buy a large chunk of land and build a home for my family. It too would be a completely sustainable homesite, employing alternative energy and environmentally friendly building supplies. There would be gardens, animals, and plenty of untouched land. I would have an art studio, Chris would have whatever features he might like, and Nolan would have room to run around and be a real kid. Our home library would be very extensive. Very extensive.

Next I would set up an organic learning farm, where people could come and stay and learn how to live closer to the land. They would be able to learn skills necessary to set up their own homesteads.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I'd set up a non-profit foundation for homesteading. As well as the farm mentioned above, we would offer grants to people that wanted to homestead. Scholarships for people studying sustainable living and farming.

I could go on and on, but Nolan has arrived and I must be going!

Blessings!

Say, did everybody see the story about the girl who's cell phone caught on fire?

I feel bad for her, as she will now be the butt of many jokes.

I feel like writing, but don't know what to write about!! How odd.

You may notice I've added a pictue of Nolan, now you can see his grinning face all the time!

Everything can be blamed on the full moon. That, or solar flares. It is true.

Coffee is the cure for all misery.

George Bush wants to test all Americans for mental illness, then make sure that everyone that has a "problem" receives drugs for Eli Lilly.

This is because his current tactics are not working, and he (& cronies) need to dope the population so we won't notice their shenanigans.

Soma, anyone?

Brave New World is what they're after.

I'm in a strange mood, I'll go now.

Ciao! Chow!

I'm from Ravenclaw!

You are smart, calm and calculating in a situation or problem you're faced with.
You base your decisions more of logic than a standard of morals.
But be careful, sometimes in your search for knowledge you come across as cold as Spock.

It's raining meat
And I can't see my own two feet
Two tone tan
Falling heat
Stay long around
Butt scrapes the ground
Look to the moon
It's raining meat
Raining meat
Hard as hell
And the news man thinks it's neat
